Virat Kohli added another feather to his captain on Thursday when the Indian skipper was named in TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People list. His name appears alongside tennis great Roger Federer, American quartet Kevin Durant (basketball), Chloe Kim (snowboarding), Adam Rippon (figure skating) and JJ Watt (American football). Kohli is the No. 1 ODI batsman today and as a skipper had a wonderful run in 2017.
In Tests, he defeated Australia, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka twice. India also reached the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2017. In ODIs, India beat Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand, West Indies and England. Apart from his great captaincy skills, Kohli also ended as the leading run-scorer in 2017 across formats with 2,818 runs, which included 11 hundreds, only behind Kumar Sangakkara and Ricky Ponting.
Kohli, who is often touted to be the next Sachin Tendulkar, saw the master himself penned down a tribute for Kohli in the TIME Magazine. Tendulkar wrote: “The U19 World Cup in 2008 was very important for India, as it would define the next bunch of youngsters who would go on to represent the nation. That was the first time I watched this young, passionate player lead India. Today Kohli is a household name and a champion in cricket. Even back then, his hunger for runs and consistency was remarkable, something that has become the hallmark of his game.”
Tendulkar also praised his fitness: “Every sportsman knows what it’s like to have good spells and bad ones too. Virat took the criticism he faced during a disappointing West Indies series (in 2016) and returned home with a goal: to improve not only his technique, but also his fitness level. He’s never looked back. My father always told me that if I focused on what I was doing, over time, detractors would become followers. Virat seems to have a similar outlook when it comes to his game.”
Kohli will soon be seen playing for Surrey ahead of the England tour in August. Meanwhile, India’s next assignment is against Test debutants Afghanistan in June.
