With as many as eight big-ticket films either already on the floors or being planned with him in the lead and a TV game show in the pipeline, a staggering investment of Rs 600 crore is riding on Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
On a day when Salman’s conviction and five-year jail term in the much-discussed blackbuck poaching case by a Jodhpur court came as a big jolt to Bollywood, his fans, friends and well-wishers in the film industry were hoping that the actor might get reprieve in the form of a bail on Friday when the court hears his plea.
Having delivered at least half a dozen super-duper hits like Ek Tha Tiger, its sequel Tiger Zinda Hai, Dabangg and Dabangg2, Sultan and Bajrangi Bhaijaan, Salman has been ruling the roost at the Bollywood box office for the past one decade.
Prominent among the films that will either go on the floor or being planned with him as the hero Race 3, Bharat, Kick 2, Dabangg 3, No Entry Mein Entry, Partner 2, Sher Khan and Loveratri.
Of the films featuring Salman, Race 3 is nearing completion. His three films that are yet to go on the floors are: Bharat, Kick 2 and Dabangg 3. He has also been signed to host a TV game show Dus Ka Dum. “Since Salman has been sentenced to five-year jail, Race 3, which is in the advanced
stage of production, will be affected most,” a Bollywood insider said.
Salman was till recently shooting in Abu Dhabi for Race 3, which is being directed by Remo D’Souza. Race 3 slated for 2018 Eid release is being co-produced by Salman Khan Films and Ramesh Taurani’s Tips Industries Ltd.
The film also features Jacqueline Fernandez, Saqib Saleem, Bobby Deol, Daisy Shah and Anil Kapoor.
Dabangg 3, which is third in the Dabangg series produced by his own family members, will feature Salman Khan, his brother Arbaaz Khan and Sonakshi Sinha. Prabhu Deva is expected to direct the film.
While Kick 2 directed by Sajid Nadiadwala is slated for 2019 release, Bharat is being made by Salman Khan’s brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri.
Through Loveratri, Salman is planning to launch his brother-in-law Aayush Sharma.
Hangs in the balance is the third season of Television game show Dus ka Dum. Sony Entertainment Television has already gone to town with promos announcing the impending third season of the popular game show.
Bharat is being made by Salman Khan’s brother-in-law Atul Agnihotri. Directed by Tiger Zinda Hai director Ali Abbas Zafar this is being planned for Eid release in 2019.
Meanwhile, prominent film personalities sympathised with Salman in his hour of crisis. “I am extremely shocked to hear @BeingSalmanKhan being convicted by session court but also having full trust in Indian judiciary which has many other doors to appeal for final justice whatsoever. Since He is most loved person by industry N people for his human reasons too,” filmmaker Subhash Ghai tweeted.
“I feel bad. He should be given relief. He has done a lot of humanitarian work,” Rajya Sabha member Jaya Bachchan said.
Actor Arjun Rampal tweeted, “The law takes its course. Can’t argue it. But at this point in time, I just feel helpless and my heart goes out to @BeingSalmanKhan and his family. Reason, cause the last thing @BeingSalmanKhan is, is a criminal. I feel this is too harsh. I do hope he gets the relief he deserves.”
Salman’s co-star in Hum Saath Saath Hain Alok Nath said, “It’s a little tragic that it came after 20 years. Instead, he could have been charged a hefty fine”.
