The University of Queensland came up with an interesting assignment for its journalism students. They were given an assignment on celebrity culture and their public image – which required them to choose a celebrity and analyse their public life. In the class, this one Indian student chose Priyanka Chopra! Given her popularity in pop culture even internationally, we are not surprised at all! After all, Chopra is one talented actor.
Akansha Panday, who is currently pursuing a bachelor of arts with majors in communication and Journalism from the Univeristy of Queensland in Australia, decided to choose the 34-year-old actress as the subject of her assignment. According to BuzzFeed, while other students in the class chose Leonardo DiCaprio and Will Smith, Panday decided to choose the Baywatch actress because she is “someone who doesn’t bow down to conventional roles”.
Panday tweeted about her assignment on Chopra and to her delight, the actress showed her happiness by retweeting her. Panday’s tweet read: “So proud to be writing a paper on @priyankachopra thanks for be such a great celeb for me to write an 40% assessment!”
Panday shared an excerpt from her paper with BuzzFeed. Here’s what she wrote:
Celebrities make affiliations to the public and their fans in which they practice performing a bond making the process where they use language, words, cultural symbol, and conventions to make the audience feel what the celebrity is saying is their own view as well. In Priyanka’s interview video of Time magazine, she says ‘I had the worst self-esteem when I was young’. Being a celebrity Priyanka makes herself a role model for the youth which is a majority of her audience around the globe and the idea of making affiliation with the young audience provides a big ratio.
Creating intimacy with the audience by using the cultural background as a great way to portray an Indian woman standing strong in Hollywood and not playing roles that are cliché and changing the norms of an Indian role in Hollywood.
